John Deere 42" Deck Rebuild Kits & Parts Guide
John Deere 42-inch lawn tractor decks can look very similar while using
different spindle and blade families. A common deck belt or similar model
name does not necessarily mean the complete rebuild kit is interchangeable.
This guide compares two major 42-inch configurations carried by Green Dade
Outdoor and explains how our rebuild kits progress from the essential wear
components to more complete packages with idler and spindle pulleys.
Important:
Do not select a rebuild kit based only on the words
L100, LA100, D100, E100 or 100 Series.
Confirm the complete mower model and compare the OEM numbers on your
spindles, blades, belt and pulleys before ordering.
Why John Deere 42" Deck Fitment Can Be Confusing
Many John Deere 42-inch lawn tractors use the same
GX20072 / GY20570 belt family and even the same idler
pulley references. However, the spindle assemblies and blades can still be
completely different.
This is why a belt match alone is not enough to confirm a rebuild kit.
The spindle and blade OEM families are some of the most useful identifiers
when separating these configurations.
GY20050 / GY20785 Family
Used by the Green Dade GY20995 rebuild-kit family for selected
L100, L105, L107, L108, L110, L111 and L118 42-inch applications.
GY20454 / GY20962 Family
A different spindle configuration used across selected 100 Series,
D100, E100, LA100 and X100-series 42-inch applications.
Same Belt Does Not Mean Same Kit
Both families can use the GX20072 / GY20570 belt and related idler
pulleys, while requiring different spindles and blades.
Start With the Spindle and Blade Family

Find your complete mower model.
Use the full model designation whenever possible rather than relying
only on “John Deere 100 Series” or deck width.

Compare the spindle OEM number.
Determine whether your existing spindle corresponds to
GY20050/GY20785 or GY20454/GY20962/GY21098.

Check the blade OEM family.
The older GY20995-style configuration uses GX20249/GY20567-style
blades, while the other family uses GX22151/GY20850-style blades.

Then determine how complete a rebuild you need.
Once the base deck configuration is confirmed, decide whether your
idler pulleys and spindle pulleys also need replacement.
Family 1: GY20995 / GY20050-GY20785 Configuration
Selected John Deere L100-Series 42" Decks
Common fitment includes L100, L105, L107, L108, L110,
L111 and L118, depending on the exact configuration.
The Green Dade 80-DK-004, 80-DK-012 and 80-DK-049 share the same
basic GY20995-style deck configuration. Their main difference is
how many of the deck's wear components are included.
Their core components use spindle references
GY20050, GY20785 and GX20152, blade references
GX20249, GY20567 and GX20433, and belt references
GX20072 and GY20570.

How to read this:
80-DK-004 is the core rebuild configuration. 80-DK-012 adds the two
deck idler pulleys. 80-DK-049 goes one step further and also includes
the two spindle pulleys.
Choosing Between 80-DK-004, 80-DK-012 and 80-DK-049
A
Your spindles, blades and belt need replacement, but the pulleys are still good.
Start with 80-DK-004.
B
Your deck idler pulleys are also worn or noisy.
80-DK-012 adds the GY20110/GY20629 and
GY20067/GY22172 idler-pulley families.
C
You want to replace the spindle pulleys as well.
80-DK-049 is the most complete of these three
configurations and adds the M155979/GX20335 spindle pulleys.
Family 2: GY20454 / GY20962 / GY21098 Configuration
John Deere 100, D, E, LA and X Series 42" Applications
Selected models include 102, 105, 107S, 115, 125, 135,
D100-D130, E100-E130, LA100-LA135 and X105-X145.
This family uses a different spindle and blade configuration from
the GY20995/L100 family above.
Green Dade 80-DK-017 and 80-DK-038 use spindle references
GY20454, GY20962, GY21098 and GX22186 with blade
references GX22151 and GY20850.
They can still use the familiar
GX20072 / GY20570 belt and the same two idler
pulley families. This overlap is exactly why the belt alone should
never be used to identify the correct rebuild kit.

The difference here is simple:
80-DK-017 already includes the spindles, blades, belt and both idler
pulleys. 80-DK-038 adds the two GX20367/UC23728 spindle pulleys.

Common Symptoms of Worn 42" Deck Components
Uneven Cutting
Worn spindle bearings, damaged blades or excessive spindle play can
contribute to an uneven cut.
Grinding or Bearing Noise
Rough bearings or noisy spindle assemblies often become more obvious
as blade speed increases.
Belt Keeps Coming Off
Check belt condition, routing, idler wear, spindle pulleys and deck
alignment before replacing only the belt.
Wobbling Pulleys
Excessive pulley movement can affect belt tracking and may indicate
pulley, bearing or spindle wear.
Excessive Vibration
Bent blades, worn spindle bearings or damaged pulleys can introduce
vibration into the mower deck.
Multiple Worn Parts
When several wear components have reached the end of their service
life, a rebuild kit can be more practical than individual replacement.

No. GX20072/GY20570 is used by more than one deck configuration.
You must also verify the spindle and blade OEM families.
How can I tell the two spindle families apart?
Compare the part number on your existing spindle or your mower's parts
diagram. One family replaces GY20050/GY20785, while the other replaces
GY20454/GY20962/GY21098.
Should I buy the most complete kit automatically?
Not necessarily. First confirm fitment, then inspect the idler and
spindle pulleys. If those parts are still in good condition, a smaller
configuration may be sufficient.
Does a matching 42-inch deck size guarantee compatibility?
No. Deck width is only one part of fitment. Spindles, blades, pulleys,
belt routing and OEM references can differ between 42-inch decks.
What information should I have before contacting Green Dade?
Have your complete mower model number and, whenever possible, the OEM
numbers from the spindle, blade, belt and pulleys. This makes fitment
identification much more reliable.
